So at the end of the pandemic, when travelling was allowed again, my wife had a flight to Italy. And her question was: "Should I bring you anything?"
Although expecting me to ask for something typically Italian, she was not surprised when the answer was whisky.
So, on her way back, she visited the duty free store at the airport and brought me this bottle of Kavalan Original. It's a 50cl bottle, so I always found it a cuty package that I kept pushing back in the cabinet of bottles.
And while my selectiuon grew, this bottle dissapeared in a cage of packaging of other bottles. And it remained there, hidden and gathering dust.
Up untill this week, when I did a big rearrangement of my selection and found this whisky in the back. Jumping to be openend.
Now, I'm not sure if it is a travel retail exclusive, I can not imagine an "original" is not core range, but I have not seen this whisky anywhere else. So it just might be one.
Now I have tried Kavalan before, I even reviewed one on this blog.
That one I found to be tropical, a perfect dram for summer. And I enjoyed it a full summer, pairing it with BBQs, enjoying it when the sun was setting. So this one excited me to try.
The whisky was bottled at 43% and has no age statement. But since the distillery is placed in a subtropical climate, you can expect a young whisky.
The golder is a warm amber with a slight golden hue when the light catches the glass. I was hoping for a thin ring sticking to my glass after a small dance, since the Classic did so, but this one drops flat back into mass of liquid.
On the nose I had to be carefull, from a small distance I had a firm not of fruity ethanol. Paired with caramel liquor. When returning to the glass, fruit pops up, strawberries, some pineapple and then some cherry flavored bubblegum. A weird note.
The palate is much softer and kinder to me, giving me a rich feeling of thin syrup coating my tongue, spreading some fresh pears with a hint of coconut on the tastebuds. A quick second sip deliveres some stewed apples and some pink pepper.
The finish is medium long and gives a lingering spicy note mixed with some dark roasted coffee.
