About a week ago, I had a livestream on Instagram with the Drambuddies. (If you don't know us yet, go check them out on Instagram @Drambuddies)
Before we went live, we decided this stream should have a theme. And therefore we challanged each other to find the best summer dram below 50 euro.
In the discussion, I mentioned the Stauning Høst, but got countered by Drambuddie Michiel: That was 2024. So it needed to be a 2025 bottling.
Double trouble for me, most of my bottles are currently stored elsewhere and I was limiting my new purchases and focussing on what bottles were already open.
No 2025 editions however. Then I remembered the Tamnavulin Sauvignon Blanc Cask and its price range. So I decided to step on my bike to the Gall&Gall, (You remember the Old Particular Balmenach 12 right?) and see if there was an edition for 2025. And I was in luck!
The Tamnavulin Port Cask, bottled in 2025 and what a dram to enjoy on a warm summer evening! In the live stream, I don't think we decided what candidate delivered by a Drambuddie won the title, but below is my review of this dram!
This bottle was part of batch number 010668 and bottled at 40% Vol.
I matured on American oak barrels and Tawny Port casks.
I normally discuss the color, but since this one contains coloring, I can describe it, but it was created on purpose. If you are a bit curious, check the picture of my glass in this blog.
The nose surprised me at first. Intense rich aromas tickled my nostrils: Brown sugar, milk chocolate, dried strawberries, candied cherries and some blueberries.
In the back of the nose, some fresh apple pie with cinnamon and vanilla creme pop up, but don't linger.
The first sip was less overwhelming than the nose. A soft start with green grapes, followed by some cake and then going towards some sweet and sour raspberries, ending with some oakiness.
The finish is short, carrying the more heavier notes like the darker fruits and the hint of grape skins.
