Rummieclub Organic Paraguay Molasse Rum

Is this a generally available rum? No, it is not. But I did wanted to review this rum, since I got it as a malternative.

Rummieclub. It was a rum distillery in Amsterdam.
Yes, was. They stopped distilling in 2024.
This PX cask however, was bought by Perfect Dram to support the leaving company.
The Rum was distilled from molasse from Paraguay.

There. That is all I know.
It also shows what I know about Rum. It is made from Molasse. This is apparently a thick, dark and sweet syrup, that is the byproduct of refined sugar cane.
And I love that: using a byproduct for a new product.

This Rum was distilled on 13-04-2023 and bottled on 13-09-2025. It aged in a 1st fill PX Sherry Cask. And that is what made me try this one. I never had a Sherry cask aged rum. So here we go:

The nose surprises me. It is very herbal. Green grasses mixed with some mint and basil. Some dried flowers as well. It is all coated with some sweet notes of apple syrup and charred cane sugar.

On the tongue it feels very thick and the herbal notes become almost medicinal. It reminds me of some herbal tea mixed with demerara sugar.

The sweeter notes linger longer than the mint and other herbs and leave the pure sweetness of cane sugar. At the back of it, some more notes going towards sherry or wine pop up. A little sweet sour grape note lingers a bit before turning into a thick sugar cane juice.

The finish is long and consist mainly out of sweeter notes mixed with some of the herbal notes.

It has been my first rum in years and to be honest, this was a nice malternative.
I was surprised on how herbal and layered this drink is and how sweet the ending. In some weird way it reminds me of the sugar cubes made of cane suger that my grandmother had on the table in a little wooden bowl, next to the glass bowl filled with potpourri.
